چکیده

A farm operator household time-allocation model and data from the Farm Costs and Returns Survey and from other sources were used to derive off-farm wage equations for U.S. farm operators based on production region, size of farm, and farm type. These equations, in turn, were used to impute opportunity costs for farm operators' unpaid labor. Using this new method, instead of the ad hoc method of valuing labor at hired labor wage rates, should improve the structure of conmiodity cost and return statements, including those developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Automatic milking systems, farm size, and milk production.

Automatic milking systems (AMS) offer relief from the demanding routine of milking. Although many AMS are in use in Europe and a few are used in the United States, the potential benefit for American farms is uncertain. A farm-simulation model was used to determine the long-term, whole-farm effect of implementing AMS on farm sizes of 30 to 270 cows. Highest farm net return to management and unpa...

Farm Income Variability and the Supply of Off-Farm Labor

If farmers are risk averse, greater farm income variability should increase off-farm labor supply. This effect is confirmed for a sample of Kansas farmers. Off-farm employment of farmers and their spouses is also found to be significantly influenced by farm experience, off-farm work experience, farm size, leverage, efficiency, and farm-specific education. In addition, farm operators and spouses...

Off-Farm Work and Capital Accumulation Decisions of Farmers over the Life-Cycle: The Role of Heterogeneity and State-Dependence

This paper aims to construct an empirical model for the analysis of two principal simultaneous decisions of farm operators: participation in the off-farm labor market, and the amount of resources to invest in farm capital. We first develop a theoretical model analyzing the effects of exogenous shocks on farmers’ decisions. Then, we estimate jointly a multinomial probit model of farmers’ off-far...

Farming Efficiency and the Determinants of Multiple Job Holding by Farm Operators

The extent to which farm families engage in off-farm employment activities is a topic of central importance to understanding the financial well-being of farm households. The degree of financial stress experienced by U.S. farm families is always a concern to policy makers. Yet, policy considerations often ignore the substantial involvement of most farm households in nonfarm labor markets. It has...
